WHAT'S UP WITH OUR NAME?
Pierre Magnol was a 17th century botanist, born in the city of Montpellier, France, a sister city of Louisville.
He was an innovator, born to a family of apothecaries, what we might call chemists today.
He devised and published the core system of our botanical classification system, based on plant families.
Before his death, Charles Plumier (think Frangipani genus Plumeria) named the flowering tree from the island of Martinique, "Magnolia" after him.
The title was adopted by prominent scholars, eventually making it the term for this broad genus of beautifully ornamental (and edible) flowering trees. As a scholar, nature lover, humanist, designer, and artist, much like our namesake, we have crafted the home to foster such diversity. We also want to grow our own (plant) family to include others like you. Magnolias are also intrinsically tied to this place, in the name of the street, and beautiful Jane in the front yard. Magnolias also signify warm Southern hospitality the world over.
Yes, it's a lot to evoke in one name, but mostly it's a synchronistic way to express the uniqueness of this place.
We look forward to hearing what you think!
